Over 1600 men with Shetland connections served in the Army during the First World War. Casualties were constant during the four years of conflict. The worst concentrated loss occurred on 13th November 1916 during the final phase of the Battle of the Somme, on the River Ancre. During this phase, 22 Shetland men were killed or died of wounds. Many were in the Shetland Territorials, Shetland's own "Pals" grouping. This is the story of that day and the devastating impact it had upon our community, remembered 100 years later.
