In 1976, Brian Smith became Shetland’s first archivist. Since his
appointment, however, he has been much more than a record
keeper. In his prolific output of essays, books and lectures, he
has constantly worked to broaden and deepen our
understanding of Shetland’s often obscure history.
The essays in this volume, contributed by leading experts in
diverse fields, have been written in this spirit.
